The #1 Reason Not to Hire Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSWhat’s the #1 reason why you shouldn’t hire My answer is simply this: If you don’t care about the service experience that you receive, you should not hire our company. (When I say the service experience, I mean everything that you feel, see, and hear when you come in contact with an organization.) At, we are dedicated and committed to making the service experience as great as possible—whether it’s being able to find us, how we make you feel whenever you give us a call, how we can assure you that we’ll take care of your problem, or how we’re available whenever you do need to reach us. Do we show up on time when we say that we’re going to show up? If something does come up, do we contact you to let you know that we wouldn’t be able to make that appointment window? Are the people that you dealt with or came to visit your home polite, friendly, and knowledgeable? If we didn’t care about the service experience, on the other hand, you would encounter someone selfish, rude, and uncommunicative. We also try very hard to create a consistent experience. If you had a certain kind of experience one time and then a completely different experience with the next person, that would be extremely frustrating. The reason you called us back in the first place was because of the experience that you had. Even though we might not hit 100% every time, we work tirelessly to provide you with that consistent...

James’ Top 3 Essential Gadgets Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSHere are the top 3 gadgets that I couldn’t live without in my day-to-day activities at   My Watch One of the main things I manage is time. A leader once told me, “If you’re a manager who doesn’t wear a watch, you aren’t really a manager.” (I made sure to pick up a watch that same day.) I’ve grown to value the concept of time management because we’re only given so much time each day. I do believe that a watch helps you to stay efficient. You won’t be caught by surprise when 5:00 p.m. rolls around and you haven’t gotten much done. I actually misplaced my watch a few days ago, and I really struggled without it. It’s definitely very important to me. My Cell Phone Most people are attached to their cell phones these days, but they are extremely useful multipurpose devices. I use my phone’s camera to share information with clients and employees. I also use it to augment my own memory. This past Sunday, for example, I was in a restaurant that had a poster listing that day’s specials. I took a picture of it and brought it back to my table. I also keep my schedule on my phone, which syncs with my computer. It’s definitely helpful with allocating time for important tasks. Most importantly, though, I value how my phone makes me available to the people that need me. Whether it’s my clients, employees, or family, my cell phone allows me to be accessible by those who need...’s New Salem Office Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSWe just recently opened up a new office space in Salem. Our goal is to broaden our recruitment area to find more great people who live further away from our main office. Like I said in my previous blog post, we want to have the greatest people on our team, and a closer office means that people who live further away won’t have to make a long commute. That impacts the client in a significant way simply because a great, happy, and competent employee is able to deliver an outstanding customer service experience. If you’re located in the Salem area and you’re interested in joining the team at, visit The website has a video along with my cell phone number. (Call me if you have any questions.) You can complete the entire application process online. Once I receive your application, I’ll look at your resume and determine if you meet our criteria. My colleague, Carl, helps me with my pre-interview work. He will reach out to applicants to get a few things completed before we schedule an interview. There are many great employees in our direct area, but they’re satisfied with where they’re working right now. By broadening our footprint with the new Salem office, we’ll be able to find even more of the greatest people in our area. Take a look at my previous blog post, where I talk about some of the qualities that I look for when hiring new employees. That information will be instrumental in helping you to prepare. If you...

Our Criteria for Hiring Great People at Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSWhen it comes to growing our team, we’ve always looked for good people who we could coach, manage, and train. Over the last few years, though, we haven’t just been looking for more good people. We’ve been on the search for people that are better than good—they are genuinely great people. We have a clear vision about what it takes for us to reach our true potential. In order for us to achieve that vision, it’s really all about the people that lie within the company. Here is the criteria that I go through to see if I’ve found somebody great. Opinions – When someone applies at our company, I give an assessment to uncover their opinions. Everyone has an opinion that’s formed through experiences and knowledge. I look at these opinions to see how the person makes decisions. It’s very important for me to know how someone differentiates right from wrong, for example. When a person is under pressure, these traits will naturally come to the surface. Talent – I look at the talent and the skill sets that the individual currently has. What skills does the person possess in order to be capable of doing the job? Of course, skills can be developed over time. However, it sure is nice whenever someone already possesses great leadership and communication skills. Acumen – I pay attention to the person’s acumen, which is their way of thinking and comprehending. Can they comprehend complex decisions? How do they see themselves and the world outside of themselves? This is a key...

Shopping For a Garbage Disposal Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSIf you’re shopping for a new garbage disposal, I think you should start by asking yourself the following question: What are my needs when it comes to a garbage disposal? How frequently do you use it, what do you put down the disposal, and do you have a septic system or not? If you use the garbage disposal very frequently, I would not recommend settling for a low horsepower system. Residential models come with ⅓, ½, ¾, and 1 horsepower. I recommend not going below ¾ horsepower. If you replaced a ¾ horsepower system with something that had less power, it would be extremely noticeable. What is the warranty? There are many cheap options out there when it comes to garbage disposals. The worst thing that would happen is that the garbage disposal will fail, putting water under your sink and causing damage. Most people have a lot of things stored underneath the kitchen sink. If there is a leak, then all those items will become damaged (along with the cabinet itself). It’s a good idea for you to buy a garbage disposal that has a lifetime warranty. They are out there, and  you won’t ever have to worry about what to do in case it fails. If you don’t want to go for that option, just make sure that it has a good warranty that covers both labor and parts. Am I going to put a lot of items in the garbage disposal? You will want to want to pay attention to the RPMs that the garbage...

Sump Pumps 101 Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSA sump pump’s job is to pump the water that gathers in a low spot up to somewhere where it can be disposed of (away from the home). Most generally, you’ll find a sump pump in the basement or crawlspace under the home. Sump pumps are not used for sewage or gray water (they are mainly used for surface water). If you don’t have a drain in a low spot of your home, it’s a very good idea to use a sump pump. That way, if any leak occurs or any rainwater enters into the home, the sump pump will be able to expel the water. The water will be removed instead of causing damage to your home. How it Works There are a few things to consider about how a sump pump works. First of all, most sump pumps have a float on them. When the water level raises to where the float is, the pump automatically turns on. Once the water pumps down past that level, the float will shut the pump off. The discharge should not go to the sewer. Since it is surface water, the discharge should be outside, on top of the ground. You wouldn’t want to put rainwater (or any high volume of water) into the sewer, because it could cause damage. Backup & Precautions It’s very important to put an alarm on the sump pump. Since you’re relying on the sump pump to do an important job, you would want to be alerted if it ever failed. The alarm is really...
